Lowering a 2021-2026 GM SUV has always involved one trade-off: the lower the stance, the closer the rear control arms sit to the pavement, turning speed bumps and steep driveways into daily calculations. MaxTrac’s new high clearance rear lowering control arms (part# 200803HC) are a direct answer, delivering 50% more ground clearance than the previous 0″-4″ arm design (part# 200804). 

This post breaks down what changed and how to choose between the standalone rear lowering control arms for GM SUV applications and the complete 2021-2026 GM SUV lowering kit with spindles and rear arms. Both fit the 2021-2026 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV in 2WD and 4WD, so the parts below apply whether the build calls for a Tahoe lowering kit, a Yukon lowering kit, or an Escalade lowering kit. 

The Ground Clearance Problem on a Lowered GM SUV 

On this platform, the rear suspension is independent and the lower control arms hang below the frame. Traditional GM SUV lowering control arms achieve their drop by relocating the strut mounting position, but the arm itself still occupies the same low real estate, so it becomes the first thing to contact a speed bump or driveway transition. On a daily driver, lowered Tahoe ground clearance is not an abstract spec: it determines how the owner approaches every parking lot entrance, and how often a shop sees that customer back for scraped components.

What Changed: The New 0″-3″ HC Arms vs the Old 0″-4″ Arms

The factory arms carry 5.25″ of ground clearance. The new HC arms measure 3.25″ at their lowest point, a 2″ reduction from stock and 50% more clearance than the outgoing 0″-4″ arms. 

The trade-off is simple: the new arms cap the rear drop at 3″ instead of 4″. For most builds, a 2″ front and 3″ rear stance is the target anyway, since it levels the factory rake and keeps the vehicle usable. Builds that genuinely need a 4″ rear drop can still use the 200804 arms. 

One tire-related note: models with factory 22″ wheels ship with a smaller diameter tire than 20″ wheel models, so they sit slightly closer to the ground at the same drop setting. 

Design Details That Matter to Installers 

Beyond the clearance figure, the 200803HC arms are built around real-world serviceability: 

Adjustable drop without swapping parts 

The arm carries four strut mounting positions: stock height, 1″, 2″, and 3″ of drop. One part number covers every stance, and ride height can be re-set later on the same arms. 

Shorter arm length for alignability 

The shorter-than-factory design gives the alignment tech the range needed to bring a lowered rear end back into spec. 

Vulcanized rubber bushings 

Rubber rather than harsh polyurethane preserves ride quality on what is, for most owners, a family hauler first. 

Ride height sensor brackets included 

Drive and passenger side relocation brackets ship in the box, with dedicated sensor plate holes for each drop height so the body position sensors read correctly. 

Broad suspension compatibility 

The standalone arms fit standard, MagneRide, and Adaptive Ride Control suspensions. Neither product fits the AT4 model. 

Lowering Kit vs Rear Control Arms Only: Which One Do You Need? 

MaxTrac offers the HC arms two ways, and the right choice depends on the stance goal and the suspension package on the vehicle.

The pick when the front is staying at stock height or is already handled, or when a MagneRide or Adaptive Ride Control vehicle needs a rear-only solution that bolts up without extra sensor hardware. Sold as a pair, with a published install time of 3 hours.

Complete 2″/3″ lowering kit, part# KS330823HC 

This kit pairs the same rear HC arms with MaxTrac’s 2″ front lowering spindles (part# 101920) for the classic leveled 2″ front, 3″ rear stance.  As listed it fits non-MagneRide models; MagneRide and Adaptive Ride Control SUVs require the part# 1019AR sensor bracket set for the front spindles. Published labor is 6 hours.

For buyers specifically searching for a lowering kit with more ground clearance, the KS330823HC is the configuration to look at, since it is the only 2″ 3″ drop kit GM SUV owners can order with the high clearance rear arm design included. 

A few fitment rules apply on the kit side because of the front spindles: 18″ rims or larger with 6″ of backspacing or less are required, and 17″ wheels do not work, including a 17″ spare. The spindles carry a slightly reduced turning radius to clear factory 18″ wheels; trucks on 20″ or larger rims can restore full turn radius through a clearancing procedure in the install guide, and fender trimming may be required. 

On both products, MaxTrac does not recommend wheels wider than 9″ or with less than 4.5″ backspacing, as doing so voids manufacturer warranties.

Installation: What the Job Looks Like 

The rear arm installation is a bolt-on procedure with no cutting or welding. The factory arm comes off at the strut, spindle, and cam bolt, the new arm goes in with the logo plate and brake line brackets facing the rear, the strut bolts into the hole matching the chosen drop, and the sensor hardware transfers to the new brackets. Final torque on the cam bolts happens at ride height to protect the rubber bushings from premature wear. 

Three post-installation steps are non-negotiable: have the alignment checked, adjust the headlights for the new stance, and re-torque all hardware after 500 miles.
